Fiona O’Cleirigh

Fiona is a journalist who has turned from the dark side to the light, where creativity in writing is welcomed. Returning to the bosom of her family in west Penwith, she learned Cornish, completing her language examinations in 2022.

In 2021, Fiona translated Vicky Abbott’s song lyrics for the St Just Ordinalia into Cornish, as well as taking a turn on the boards as the disciple James the Greater. She has translated work for other songwriters and poets, and supported actors working within the Cornish language. She is particularly interested in helping to promote Cornish both as cultural heritage for present and future generations, and as an art language, for film, poetry and music. Fiona is a bard of the Cornish Gorsedd.

The poems/lyrics for Stations of the Cross were written during an Endelienta residency in 2022. The project was inspired by the experience of feeling the language expressed within the community during the Ordinalia, especially the Last Supper, below – for which, incidentally, Ben played the violin.
